A flat roof is never truly flat — it is built with a slight fall — but it is far too shallow for anything that sheds water by overlap. Shingles and tile rely on gravity and lap; on a low-slope deck water sits, and it will find every lap eventually.
The answer is a single-ply membrane. TPO is heat-welded at the seams, so the joins are effectively part of the sheet rather than a bonded overlap, and it is light in colour, which matters on a large commercial deck in the sun.
Membrane thickness is the specification that moves the price and the warranty: 45, 60 and 80 mil are the common weights, and the heavier the sheet the longer the cover.
