Expected life

Roof type
Pitched or low slope

Standing seam metal is formed panels joined by raised, concealed-fastener seams. Nothing penetrates the weather surface, which removes the single most common leak path on a fastened roof.

It sheds water and snow fast, does not support combustion, and in a light finish reflects a significant share of solar gain rather than holding it — which in a hot climate shows up on a cooling bill. Expect forty to seventy years.

The costs are real too: two to three times asphalt, and it is unforgiving of a bad set-out. Panels are cut to the building, so a cut-up roof with dormers and turrets takes skilled hand-forming at every junction.
